Book Jackets.

I'm enjoying this now.
Happy with the imagery, but those circles need work...
Click for big view.
I have no idea why the chicken one is all liney, damn JPEGs and their mysterious ways.
Disclaimer: with the exception of the trolleys book, the author images are NOT images of the actual authors. They're just random men. I have no idea who they are.

More Chickeny Goodness...

... Courtesy of my good friend Sarah, who happens to be in posession of some chickens, and has been kind enough to take some delightful pictures for me. I've livened them up a bit :D
This is still working progress.

Weird book titles...

Our new brief involves designing book jackets, we have to pick three from a list of titles. The list of titles are taken from the oddest book titles annual competition. (some of which you can view here).
After much thought, I've opted for 'The joy of chickens', 'Highlights in the history of concrete' and 'Stray shopping carts of Eastern North America: A guide to their field identification'....
I'm struggling though. I was initially really excited about this project, but my ongoing struggle with being too literal, combined with an unusual lack of inspiration is making getting started a bit tricky.
But uh, here's a start, highlights in the history of concrete.

Yeah... literal is sort of my thing. Oh dear.

Hissing Fauna, are you the Destroyer?

This is probably my favourite project I did in the first year of uni, but it's only now that I've got around to photographing it properly.
We were asked to design a CD booklet for a CD of our choice... I chose what was, at the time, my favourite album - Of Montreal's 'Hissing Fauna, are you the Destroyer?'
If you don't know it, I can't recommend it highly enough. A fascinating album, on many levels, based around the lead singers struggles with depression. If you weren't to listen to the lyrics, this wouldn't necessarily be immediately apparent, the album sounds sometimes joyful, sometimes manic, with a dark edge, but often a subtle one. With this in mind, I didn't want to create something too overtly dark... I wanted something a little bit less obvious than lots of black...

I was interested in how depression is sort of like a forest. I've been lucky enough never to experience full blown depression in my life, but in the few times where I've really struggled to pick myself up from gloom, I find it almost like a metaphorical forest, dark, and seemingly endless, with trees pressing in from all sides. I took this idea on further to create my final idea.
Used mixed media, a letterpressed cover and recurring tree sort of themes, I produced something which I found both pleasing, and I feel, accurately represents how the music makes me feel. So, there we go.

Steve Reich - Early Works

More from my studio shoot today, this is the CD case/cover/leaflet I produced for Steve Reich's 'Early works' album. For more info about this project, see here and here

BATCH

I went to the photography studio today, to finally get round to photographing some of my work. This is a project I did around Christmas/New Year time, can't remember exactly. Here is my previous post about this project, see it for more details.

Burst!

It's been a while since I've posted...
Here's something I did briefly the other day, for a competition to design a logo for the new University of Brighton Radio station. Doubt it'll win, but I just fancied giving it a go.
Red or black, depending on what they like more.
